Ivie's First Kindergarten Field Trip: Duke Gardens

This past Wednesday, Ivie had her first field trip with her Kindergarten class! While Ivie was excited about this major event in her young life, she wasn't too thrilled to learn that the destination was at DOOK. So it took some major convincing to get Ivie to believe that it might actually be fun.

I took the morning off work so I could chaperone. And, of course, my camera came along for the ride! Ivie's partner for the day was Lizzie, so I got quite a few pictures of the two of them together, along with a few of their other classmates.

We were only there for an hour, but it was the perfect amount of time. The kids had a fun nature walk/scavenger hunt, looking for squirrels, birds flying/singing/swimming, a sundial, berries on bushes, a boat, etc. They also had some time to feed dried corn to the ducks.

The first field trip was, by all accounts, a success. Ivie can't wait for the next one!

Ivie ran over to me after their Opening Chapel concluded this morning. I thought she just wanted to say bye. Turns out she wanted to hand off a booger she'd picked. NICE.

Never underestimate the mood-lifting power of a new shower head. Now, Bryce, if you could just sleep through the night tonight, I'd appreciate it...

At CiCi's for lunch with Ivie and her friend, Caroline. The pizza cook keeps announcing (loudly) what he's putting on the buffet. Caroline, perplexed, asks, "Why does he keep screaming?!?".

Heart rate, you can return to normal. It was just a bug scurrying across the kitchen at my feet. A BIG bug, but a bug nonetheless.

Thanks in large part to Miss Linda and Miss Gail, Bryce is now a champion rice cereal eater. Just finished off what I consider to be 3 servings, and he's mad that it's gone.

Is it a coincidence that it's my birthday and the last 2 songs on Sirius Prime Country have been "Miami My Amy" and "Amy's Back in Austin"?!?

And the next song is "The Woman With You". Dale, I think it's a sign that I'm supposed to quit my job!!!

I'm way too entertained by drivers that work hard to get into the turn lane only to pull in right behind a Chapel Hill Transit "S" bus that I know is going to stop at a bus stop BEFORE their turn. So they have to then sit and wait. Rookies.

It's "Bring Your Pet to School Day" for Iv today. She doesn't have one. Judging from her reaction, this ranks only slightly lower on the disappointment scale than the day she didn't find a critter in the cup of dirt she had to bring from home.

Macie's 3rd Birthday

Macie's birthday was on a Saturday this year (September 10th); before I knew it, the Thursday-night-before arrived, and I realized that I didn't have anything to send to school with her the next day for a birthday treat for her class. So Dale took the girls with him to Target so that Macie could pick something out from the bakery. If I didn't have time for a homemade treat, the least we could do was let her pick something out herself, right?

They came home with these:

I DID, however, make a cake for us to have after our birthday dinner on Saturday night. I've never claimed to be much of a cake decorator. but I thought this turned out okay:

And here's the standard "Happy Birthday" song, along with the subsequent blowing out of the candles, on video:

Show-and-Tell, Round 67: Ostrich

Ivie still has show-and-tell on occasion in Kindergarten. During their week of lessons on "birds", they had, you guessed it, "Bird Show-and-Tell Day". Now, you can imagine that this themed show-and-tell stuff might stress me out. What if we don't have anything that will "work"? (Although I was forced to get over that fairly quickly when the next week was "Pet Show-and-Tell", and we clearly weren't going to go out and get a pet just so Ivie would have something to take to school. She handled it better than I would have thought. Probably because she was entertained by her friends' dogs, guinea pigs, and hamsters.)

But I digress. For Bird Show-and-Tell Day, Ivie settled on this stuffed ostrich. Primarily because her daddy guilt-tripped her into it. You see, he's partial to it because it was a gift from an ex-girlfriend back in the day. At least we're honest about these things, right?!? I must admit it's pretty unique. And I'm fairly certain that no other kindergartner showed up with something that looked like this.

A Slice of Bryce (#12): Five Months!!!

Another month has flown by! Time for another list to document Bryce's developments:

1) Bryce is almost sitting up on his own. With the help of the Boppy cradled behind him, he can now sit and play with toys. He's still a bit top/front heavy, but his back and belly muscles seem to be getting stronger every day.

2) B has started taking an occasional nap on his belly. But he continues to sleep through the night on his back. So the jury is still out in terms of what his favorite sleeping position will end up being.

3) It's getting easier and easier to get a belly laugh out of him. And it's just the sweetest sound. I don't remember either of the girls being this quick to laugh, so I'm enjoying every opportunity I get to make him cackle.

4) You know the phrase, "It'll get worse before it gets better"? It seems to apply to B and his spitting. Maybe it's just more noticeable since his spit now contains remnants of "real" food and not just breastmilk. But, either way, it doesn't seem to be going away. Guess we'll have to keep the bibs handy for a while more...

5) We moved Bryce up to the big boy car seat. He was just getting too heavy for me to lug around in the infant carrier.

6) He's really started reaching for toys, which makes his froggy bouncer and doorway jumper more entertaining. He will sit happily in both of these for significant periods of time. He's even been known to fall asleep in them if I don't get to him in time and the weariness takes over.

7) We've experimented with several different varieties of Size 1 Fruits and Vegetables. Bananas and pears seem to be favorites, but Bryce doesn't really like the peaches much. And there appears to be a slight preference for the yellow/orange veggies (sweet potatoes, carrots, squash) than for the green ones (green beans, peas).

8) Though no tooth has made an appearance yet, the first one can't be far away. If the increase in slobbering and hand-chomping is any indication, that is.

A Minute in the Life (#3): The Doorway Jumper

I love how happy he is in this jumper! We're talking literally MINUTES of entertainment...

Life With Three

I got an email from a friend twenty-one days ago (but who's counting?!?), asking how "life with three" was going. Turns out she and her husband are contemplating a third child; one is apprehensive, the other gung ho. So she thought she'd check in for some first-hand stories of just how insane it is.

Her email was timely, as I've wanted to get some thoughts on this in writing on the blog, anyway (before some of them are a distant memory). Please, friend-that-will-remain-nameless, don't deem the fact that it took me 3 weeks to respond to your email as a wordless answer to your question!

I've often said that if I could birth one-year-olds, I'd want to have tons of kids! With the girls, the first years of their lives were, at least in my memory, centered around the daily chaos of rushed morning rituals, full work days, pumping, cleaning the never-ending stack of dirty plastic pump parts/bottles/sippy cups, rushing home to throw together a quick dinner, and ultimately heading upstairs for bath and bedtime. While I know it didn't always feel hurried and crazy as we were going through it, it certainly seemed that way when I looked back on it after we'd settled into the toddler years. I mean, the fact that I could get on an airplane to fly to see my family and not have to worry about nursing and/or packing the pump? Awesome. Freeing. Dare I say it? CALM.

If I were asked to give a 4-letter word to describe our lives these days with three kiddos, I could think of several that would work. The one that wouldn't would be "calm".

I'm a planner by nature, but one thing that 3 kids has forced me to do is to basically plan every minute of every day. It certainly is more challenging, now that Ivie is in an essentially-half-day Kindergarten. While we love the Christian environment that we're blessed to have her in, it also involves making arrangements with 2 other families for morning carpool, as well as organizing after-school care that literally is different every single day of the week. These sorts of plans are actually right up my alley (you should see the morning carpool calendar that I created!), but I must admit it's mind-numbing. It's constant. And you have to be "on your game" all the time. It doesn't seem like there's ever really time to sit back and take a deep breath. Because if I DO have that time, it's likely I'll fall asleep from exhaustion.

And then there's work. My thoughts go back and forth on this issue, even more so since Bryce's arrival. I (mostly) love my job. I mean, there are aspects about everyone's jobs that aren't ideal, right? But I enjoy my co-workers, and I feel like I'm able to use my God-given gifts "for the good of the order". But on days (like this past Tuesday) when I pick Bryce up at 4:45p from day care, head to a friend's house to get Ivie and Macie (because the friend, who has 2 girls the same ages, was graciously willing to pick all 4 of them up from their respective schools and let them play together that afternoon), and then have to drive the 10 minutes home with two overly-tired, crabby, screaming, sobbing, hitting, angry girls, all while mentally scratching the dinner I had planned and instead contemplating what I can throw together FAST so as to thwart the next round of fussiness when the food isn't sitting on the table ready to be devoured just as soon as they walk in the door... On THOSE types of days, when the headache that started small toward the end of the work day but wound up taking over and sending me to bed waving the white flag at 8:30p, a big part of me wonders if any job is really worth it. The debate still rages within.

But enough about that. Because, really, when it comes to life with 3 kids, it's not about the job. While my employment outside of the home is, certainly, a minor factor in my personal fulfillment, it's not what keeps me going. As I tell Dale, it's not what makes me "tick".

As I sit here typing and watching Bryce content in his swing, "singing" softly, absentmindedly biting on his pointer finger, and blinking with eyelids that get noticeably heavier each time, I can no longer remember what our family was like without him. Nothing about it is easy, for sure, and days are long, repetitive, and tiresome. I wake up nearly 2 hours before the kids, get to work much later than I used to, drag 4 bags into the office each day, have sometimes gotten so involved with work that I forget that I need to shut my door and pump, leave work in time to make the well-over-an-hour trek to the two schools that are located on opposite sides of town, rush home to a house full of tired and hungry kids, somehow manage to get them all (and sometimes even myself) fed, muster up the energy to play for an hour before bath and kids' bedtimes, and then spend another hour washing bottles and readying the house to do it all over again the next day.

But even with ALL of that daily craziness, I can sit here and say, without hesitation, that I'm a happy mom of three kids. The path down which Dale and I have brought our now family of five may not always be rosy, blissful, predictable, effortless, or uncomplicated, but it's worth it. Every second, minute, day, and week. So much so that words can't even describe. And you know why?

Because, through it all, love multiplies. Exponentially.

A Minute in the Life (#2): My Princesses. Dancing and Singing.

My girls still love to play dress-up. And they also love to watch videos of themselves. The other day, they were watching a past video of them dancing in their dresses, and they decided they wanted to perform a reenactment.

My favorite part is when, out of the blue, Ivie breaks out into "Chicken, Airplane, Rocket", which is a technique used by her swimming instructor to teach them a stroke. But Ivie gives it a little flair. You'll see. Random.

Macie's Turn (#14): Golf Ball Birth Announcement

For those of you that don't know, Dale is an avid golfer. So when all 3 of our children were born, he ordered golf balls to announce their arrivals. We kept some, obviously, and Macie ran across hers the other day. It just so happened it was Show-and-Tell Day, so she took it to show her friends.
