A Slice of Bryce (#11): 4-Month Measurements

Just popping in to give an update on Bryce's physique following his 4-month check-up this morning. Come on. You know you're dying to know exactly what he weighs in at these days...

Height: 26 inches (80th percentile)
Weight: 17 pounds, 15 ounces (90th percentile)
Head Circumference: 44 centimeters (90th percentile)

I was really hoping that we would surpass the 18-pound mark, but he fell an ounce shy. Oh well. When I told Dale afterward that B had "dropped" to the 90th percentile in weight (since he was in the 97th percentile at 2 months), his response was, "He's thinning out!".

Not so much.

But it IS slightly amusing to compare his stats to those of his sisters at 4 months:

1) Bryce is a little taller - Ivie and Macie were 25 3/8 and 25 inches tall, respectively;

2) His head is a little bigger - Ivie's was 41.9 centimeters, and Macie's was 42;

3) But he blows them out of the water in weight - The girls were 15 pounds, 7 ounces, and 15 pounds, 13 ounces. In fact, he weighs more at 4 months than Macie did at 6 1/2 (17 pounds, 7 ounces).

Coming out of the appointment, the only thing that Bryce doesn't do that is "normal" for 4-month olds is roll over. He shows no interest so far, which might, as I've said earlier, have something to do with the fact that I don't practice tummy time with him. I'm sure he'll figure out the rolling skill soon enough. Since Ivie didn't roll over until she was 8 months old, though, I won't hold my breath.

A Slice of Bryce (#10): Four Months!!!

So, I blinked (that's what I get for not listening to Kenny Chesney when he tells me not to), and Bryce woke up one morning and was four months old. How is this happening?!? SLOW DOWN, BUGGABOOSKY!

Given my list of 10 things at 3 months, the pressure's on to write about how much Bryce grew and changed during month 4. Since it's gone by so fast, I don't really have much that sticks out in my mind, but I'll see how many I can come up with on the fly...

1) We'll start with really the only negative change. The last 5 nights, B has woken up and screamed for 15 minutes until I've given in and nursed him. The first couple of nights, he was battling a stuffy nose, so I, optimistically, blamed it on him just not feeling good and needing to be soothed by nursing. But he's feeling much better now, and he's still waking up, though it's moved from midnight the first couple of nights to about 4a the last 3. I'm hoping this is his way of telling me that he's ready for rice cereal and is going through a growth spurt. But I'm worried that he's simply regressing. Time will tell. It's just so difficult playing hard-ball with him, since his vocal cords carry a much stronger punch than his sisters' did (or do, for that matter!). I'm worried he's going to wake the whole house if I don't give in and feed him!

So we've started with rice cereal (another blog post on that coming soon) and hope that he gets the hang of it quickly so we can fill his ever-growing belly enough to get him to sleep comfortably through the night. Again. Like he did at 3 months of age!

But on to the positive...

2) Bryce is trying like crazy to sit up like a big boy. His large belly assists him in this balancing effort, as he looks sort of like a sumo wrestler with his belly touching the floor between his legs. I say use it to your advantage, B-man!

3) I can't get over how much Bryce LOVES his sisters. When they stoop down to talk to him, his face lights up. And the girls can't get enough of B, either. I think this might have made the list last month, too, but it's always worth mentioning. You know, so that someday when they are fighting like cats and dogs, I can say, "See? Read this! You guys used to love each other! What ever happened to those days?!?".

4) Thankfully, B now spends a lot of time sitting upright in his frog jumper. It's a good thing, too, since his 18'ish-pound frame was really starting to weigh down the bouncy seat. He lays pretty much horizontal in it now!

5) B's still not growing any hair - he's as bald as can be! And I'm waiting for a tooth to cut through, as he's slobbering like crazy!

6) I've run out of things to say to document this month, so I'll conclude by saying that B continues to be just the sweetest baby. Unless he's hungry or tired (in which case he makes his feelings well-known), you can pretty much always find a smile on his face. My heart melts.

Ivie's First Day of Kindergarten

Ivie's anticipation of her first day of Kindergarten had almost gotten the best of her by the time Wednesday rolled around. On the way to school that morning, she said to me, "Mommy, I can't BELIEVE that it's FINALLY my first day of Kindergarten!!!".

Your daddy and I can't believe it either, sweetie...

Before we left the house that morning, we had to get some "first day of school" pictures. Too bad my camera battery was dead when I tried to turn it on. A quick frantic call to Brooke next door solved that problem, though (Have I said lately how wonderful it is to have the Devers for neighbors? Add "always having a charged camera" to the list of thousands of reasons.).

Ivie and I got to school a little bit before Dale, who had taken the "littles" to daycare first. While we waited, we snapped a few photos on the Trinity steps.

When we saw Dale pulling into the parking lot, we headed to meet him, stopping briefly to get a few pictures in front of the Trinity Lions bus.

And then we convinced another Trinity mom to take a family picture for us.

Before getting a couple of Ivie separately with Dale and me.

Then we were off to the front doors of the Lower School to wait for the teachers to swing them open and let the kids in for the start of their new adventure. We took the opportunity to get a picture in front of the Trinity mailbox - I think this will be a great way to show how much taller she is each year on the first day of school!

Then it was time to go in the building! As she walked toward the door, we saw our first (and turns out ONLY) glimpse of apprehension from Ivie...

But all was well again when Daddy grabbed her hand and entered school by her side.

We paused at her door for a few more pictures...

And then headed inside, where Ivie's first stop was to see the class hamster that Mrs. Federman had promised would be in the room to welcome them to their first day.

I noticed that Ivie's first "job" was to clean the tables. (Hopefully she does a better job of cleaning in her classroom than she does at home!)

After hanging with the hamster for a while, Ivie sat down at her desk to begin her first project: coloring in her name so they could hang the cards in the room and start to learn the names of their classmates.

Too soon, it was time for Dale and me to leave. I think we both could have stayed there forever, savoring (and dreading, at the same time) the moment that, not long ago, seemed like light years away. Before we know it, we'll be sending her off to college!

But, for now, we'll enjoy our sweet little Kindergartner. Here's hoping you have an amazing first year of school, Ivie! Your daddy and I are, as always, very proud of you.

Wordless Wednesday (#68): Ivie's Kindergarten Open House and Meet the Teacher Day

(I can't remember the last time I actually had a "worded" post. Ugh. But here's another without words - mostly, at least - telling the story of Ivie's Kindergarten Open House/Meet the Teacher Day yesterday. I promise the post documenting her first day will have words. Or at least pictures with captions. You only start school once, right?!?)
